With the promise of a year in Europe, we left our jobs mid March only to be lucky enough to still be in New Zealand when Covid starting taking hold around the world.
And what a privilege it has been to be here.
It’s been a chance to slow down, and look after the basics. Our house has never looked so clean and the gardens blooming with attention. The carport shed was completed, sourdough bread was perfected and lots of preserves in the cupboard.

Greg took on some handyman work, where one job led to another before being called back to the corporate world of DHL in August, for a 5 month contract. I continued to do a few hours a week for General Sleep, and then in September, I worked behind the scenes for the Te Atatu Electorate Office, until after the Election.
But what of our travel plans?
Since Europe is still not option for us, New Zealand has become our destination of choice. Leaving on 24 December, we fly to Wellington before boarding the Interislander on Christmas Day.
And then, it’ll be Picton and turn right…
For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move; to feel the needs and hitches of our life more nearly; to come down off this feather-bed of civilisation, and find the globe granite underfoot and strewn with cutting flints.
